The sure word of prophecy

As Christians we do not base our lives on prophecy, but instead on the only foundation that can be laid – Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 3:11).

But do we ever think about the fact a major part of Jesus’ personal revelation to us is prophecy? The entire book of Revelation is revealed by Jesus. He is the revelator, the one is who able to remove the seals of the prophetic roll. He has given us the meaning of the scrolls via His Olivet prophecy, which we find in Matthew 24, Mark 13 and Luke 21. The Olivet prophecy is Jesus’ answer to His disciples when they asked Him about the time of His return. Jesus told them to stay alert and watch for the fulfillment of specific events that will mark the approaching end of this age. If prophecy were not important, would Jesus have given such a detailed answer to the question and then inspired that it be recorded in the New Testament?

Jesus told His disciples that they were blessed to know things that others had wanted to know but were unable to know (Luke 10:23-24).

With knowledge comes responsibility. We know the basic outline of prophecy, and we are to share that knowledge as part of the gospel message we preach (Amos 3:7-8).

In the parable of the foolish virgins, found in the continuation of the Olivet prophecy, Jesus also warns us that many will be caught napping and unprepared by the surge of events that will precede the return of Jesus Christ to this earth (Matthew 25:1-13). Our knowledge of prophecy is therefore also a personal prod for us to be aware of our own personal spiritual condition and relationship with God as prophecy unfolds.

It is sobering and exciting to realize that God has given us a "more sure word of prophecy" so we can quot;take heed" (2 Peter 1:19; KJV)!

With these thoughts I wish us all a rewarding Sabbath!
