A strong cable from a thin string

In January 1848 when engineers wanted to build the first suspension bridge across the Niagara River near Niagara Falls in New York, they needed to get a cable across the 240 meter span of the river at a point 60 meters above the river.

Someone suggested flying a kite across the gorge would be the first step.

And that is what they did. Once the kite had landed on the other side, its thin string was replaced by a stronger string, then a rope, then a larger rope and finally a metal cable. The cable was the first step in the actual construction of the bridge, which was completed in August 1848.

The story about the Niagara bridge reminds us of our relationship to God. When we start our walk with God, our relationship is like the thin string of the kite that sailed across the Niagara. Our experiences in life and the choices we make determine what happens to the string. Trusting in God our Father and His son Jesus Christ and seeking to do their will every day will mean that the string is replaced by a stronger string, then a rope, etc., solidifying our relationship with God.

At the start of our walk with God, maybe we want to have a relationship like the metal cable. When we see other Christians strong in their walk with God, remember that they, too, started out as kite strings. Years of prayer, Bible Study, trusting in God and enduring and growing in life’s challenges have made them what they are.

Growing in our relationship with God is a choice we make every day. Each day we decide for that day to what extent we will follow Jesus’ example. In so doing we determine what happens to our kite string.

With these thoughts I wish us all a rewarding Sabbath!
