Are we "willing to yield?"

The apostle James tells us what the characteristics of Godly wisdom are – the wisdom that He imparts to us: "But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy" (James 3:17)

Among those characteristics is a willingness to yield.

When Jesus was asked about the greatest commandment in the Law, He replied that love toward God and love toward neighbor are the greatest commandment.

Our willingness to yield as an expression of love toward God includes having a child-like attitude, being willing to be led and taught. Jesus said: "Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 18:3).

Of course, we demonstrate our willingness to yield toward God by being submissive to His word, allowing it to direct our thoughts and actions: "Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path" (Psalm 119:105).

Our willingness to yield as an expression of love toward neighbor is seen by our not insisting on getting our own way: "Love . . . does not seek its own" (1 Corinthians 13:5). It is evidenced by a spirit of cooperation and putting the common interest ahead of personal interest. Perhaps the best evidence of our willingness to yield toward our neighbor(s) is an atmosphere of peace that permeates our interpersonal relationships.

Godly wisdom is a gift from God, imparted via His holy spirit. How evident in our lives is it by the characteristic of being willing to yield?

With these thoughts I wish us all a rewarding Sabbath!
