The sower and the seed

Judging by the title, one might think that this week's message is about the first great parable in Matthew 13. No, this message is not about the sower and his seed of the gospel. It is about us and the principle of cause and effect.

For every effect there is a cause. The apostle Paul expresses this principle of nature in the following way: "Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap" (Galatians 6:7).

Our actions and words are what we sow – the cause. They effect a result which we reap.

This principle is reflected in our relationship to God: "He who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life" (Galatians 6:8).

We also "sow" in the area of the second great commandment, in our interpersonal relationships. This is especially true with those people who are closest to us. If we experience behavior in our mate or children that is directed toward us and leaves something to be desired, then perhaps this behavior is a reaction to what we have sown. If we sow positive seed, the effect will likely be different.

(Of course, we can also experience negative behavior from others that is not the result of anything we have done.)

The apostle Paul exhorts us to be mindful of the seed we sow in our interpersonal relationships: "If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men" (Romans 12:18).

Whether towards God or our fellow man: We are all sowers of seed. Let's be mindful of the principle of cause and effect in our daily lives.

With these thoughts I wish everyone a rewarding Sabbath!
