Is UCG doing enough to survive?

The May 2010 issue of "United News" reminded me of an Elders Forum post I had written a few years ago. (more…)

The silent gospel

Can you preach the gospel of the kingdom of God by not preaching the gospel? Some people apparently think so. (more…)

German & UCG demographics

Last Sunday’s GCE presentations on the age of UCG elders and the demographics of UCG again reminded me of the similarity between UCG and German demographics. (more…)

The "gun lap" revisited

Those who read UCG’s publications may remember a "Good News" article published some months ago, titled "The Element of Surprise". Written by UCG’s President after a visit to Berlin in January 2006, the article described how things in world affairs sometimes happen quickly – and unexpectedly. (more…)

Mr. Jean Carion’s funeral

Mr. Jean Carion’s funeral was today. He died last Friday in his sleep at the age of 84. There were about 150 people in attendance at the funeral from various Church of God groups, including visitors from the "Living Church of God" and the United Church of God.

Death of Mr. Jean Carion

[with comments]     Filed under CoG Potpourri

Rees Ellis wrote me today from Belgium: "My father-in-law, Jean Carion died peacefully in his sleep this morning, Friday February 15th 2008. Thank you all for your prayers and words of encouragement over the past years." Mr. Carion was the pastor of the Worldwide Church of God congregation in Brussels, but he and his congregation separated from WCG in 1993 over doctrinal differences. They were then part of the Global Church of God. In recent years they were not aligned with any of the larger Church of God organizations, but were always hospitable to guests, including Mr. Roderick Meredith, who visited last November, and recent guests from United. I extend heartfelt condolences to Rees and Fanny.

Comment from Kenneth Griswold:

"I was saddened to hear of the death of Mr. Carion. I was in Belgium for the feast several years back and he gave an excellent sermon. I really appreciated Rees and Fanny’s hospitality along with the rest of the European brethren."

Self-fulfilling persecution

Tell your members to be prepared for persecution, and then tell them to act in a manner that provokes persecution. What happens next isn't real persecution but a self-fulfilling prophecy, as practiced by the Philadelphia Church of God. (more…)

NT inclusive leadership

As we approach Passover with its renewal of our commitment to follow in Jesus’ footsteps, I am reminded of the type of leadership Jesus inspired in the early New Testament church. (more…)

What is an "ecclesiastical" decision?

One reason given for excluding non-elders from church governance boards is that those boards are to make "ecclesiastical" decisions. The bylaws of the United Church of God, an International Association are a good example: "Decisions of the Council are ecclesiastical in nature", according to UCG bylaw 8.3.2, so non-elders do not serve on the UCG council. What is an "ecclesiastical" decision anyway? How about who should be a deacon? What about the amount given for mileage reimbursement? (more…)

Internet (Dis)Information

[with comments]     Filed under CoG Potpourri

The internet can be a great tool for doing research. It is also a source of false information, rumors, etc. The greater church of God community is no exception, with various websites and news groups dedicated to accountability, openness, "behind-the-scenes" news, etc. Unfortunately, some of those websites are as much a source of disinformation as their authors believe the WCG and the xCoGs are. Like the rumor about a move to prevent non-UCG employed elders from serving on the UCG Council of Elders. Actually, just the opposite is true. (more…)

Welcome to UCOG Today!

Welcome to the UCOG Today blog!

Why a blog? Why UCOG? Good questions – ones I hope to address in various posts.

First of all, this form of communication provides a convenient opportunity to share thoughts and experiences. Which brings me to the point of my first blog entry, addressed to the greater Church of God community:

What is our charge as Christians? Didn't Jesus tell us to lift up our eyes and look at the fields, for they are white already to harvest? What is our individual obligation in reaching and reaping that harvest?
