"O you of little faith"

We all know the story of Jesus walking on the Sea of Galilee. After Jesus had fed the 5000, he "made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away" (Matthew 14:22). After He sent the multitudes away, Jesus stayed to pray and was only ready to join His disciples after nightfall. By then their boat was "in the middle of the sea". (more…)

The unrecognized treasure

In the summer of 1866 Daniel Jacobs, a South African farmer, asked his 15 year old son Erasmus to find him a thin branch. Jacobs needed the branch to unclog a stopped pipe. As Erasmus was looking for a suitable branch, he noticed a shiny stone in the sunlight. He picked it up and use it for several months in a game played with five stones. (more…)

The wisdom of God

Paul wrote to the church at Corinth that his speech and preaching there at the time God used him to raise up the church "were not with persuasive words of human wisdom" (1 Corinthians 2:4). Paul emphasized the difference between human wisdom and Godly wisdom. (more…)

UCG Hymnal Revision?

After UCG-Germany members worked over a year to produce a one-to-one replication of the United Church of God English-language hymnal in 2009, I was amazed to learn that a revision of the English hymnal is being considered. (more…)

The new man

In chapter 6 of his epistle to the Romans the apostle Paul compares baptism to the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Our "old man" dies and is buried in baptism, just as Christ died and was buried. Then we arise from the baptismal pool to "newness of life" (Romans 6:3-6). (more…)
