Dying for someone else

In early June the news media in the state of Iowa hailed a 33 year old father a hero after he saved his daughter from an attack dog that had mauled her. The police were called to the house, and when they arrived, they found the father lying on his back in the front yard as the dog attacked him after he had gotten the dog off his daughter. The attack dog had locked his bite on the father and would not let go, so the police had to use their pistols to free the man from the dog's grip. (more…)

Preaching the gospel: sowing the seed

Just a few days ago on Pentecost we were reminded of the birth of the New Testament church. With the outpouring of the holy spirit God fulfilled Jesus’ promise to His disciples. Jesus had told them that they would receive "power from on high" (Luke 24:49). Shortly before His ascension to heaven, just ten days before Pentecost, Jesus associated this power with the preaching of the gospel (Acts 1:6-8). (more…)
