God is a social being

On the sixth day of "re-creation" week God told Adam to name all the animals. Afterwards God said: "It is not good that man should be alone" (Genesis 2:18).

The result was Eve's creation and the start of the human family. The Hebrew word used in verse 18 is the same word used in Genesis 1, verse 27, where we learn that God created man as male and female.

In Genesis 2, verse 18, God is referring to Adam who was the only human being on the earth at that time. But as our creator God's statement can apply to all humans, whether male or female. It is not good when we are alone, when we are "loners". Even our psychologists tell us that.

With His statement God has our mental and emotional well-being in mind, but perhaps something else, too. We are created in His image (Genesis 1:26), which has more to do than just with our outward appearance. As Jesus exhorts us, we are to become like God (Matthew 5:48).

If the mentality of a hermit – a "loner" – had been one of God's characteristics, He would have preferred to be by Himself. Instead, He is preparing for the expansion of His family. He wants to share His existence with His human children. Millions, yes even billions of people will one day be spirit-born children of God and live eternally as members of His family.

God has planned an eternal existence for us as part of a great family community. That's another reason why it isn't good for us to be alone, because with that mentality we won't become perfect like our Father in heaven.

With these thoughts I wish everyone a rewarding Sabbath!
