Wisdom for future kings and priests

There are people who are called "know it alls". They appear to be full of wisdom, giving (unsolicited) advice. For those among us who aren't as fully developed, the apostle James has some encouraging advice.

"If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him" (James 1:5).

Where does wisdom begin? We find an answer in the Psalms: "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; a good understanding have all those who do His commandments" (Psalm 111:10).

When Solomon became king of Israel upon his father David's death, he realized that he needed wisdom. "O Lord my God, You have made Your servant king instead of my father David, but I am a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. And Your servant is in the midst of Your people whom You have chosen, a great people, too numerous to be numbered or counted. Therefore give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil" (1 Kings 3:7-9).

Some 1000 years prior to James writing his epistle, Solomon asked for an understanding heart – an obedient heart according to Psalm 111 – to obtain wisdom.

If we as the called of God think that our situation is different from Solomon's, then maybe we don’t "know it all" yet.

In the world tomorrow we will be kings and priests (Revelation 5:10) and assist Jesus Christ in ruling over the nations (Revelation 2:26-27).

Like Solomon we, too, need an obedient heart to obtain wisdom and discern what is good and evil – for our life today and for our responsibility in the world to come.

With these thoughts I wish everyone a rewarding Sabbath!
